the "vrommmmmmpshshshsshsh" thing you are talking about is either the blow off valve, or the wastegate. The purpose of both being to release the pressure thats built up in the intake system of the motor depending on wether the throttle is open or closed, in order to relieve stress on the motor.

straight aways are not where time is made up, im sure most of those cars are around 350-400 hp, and the tracks they drive on dont have near long enough straights for the viper with 600hp to make any real distance.
